Singapore and Thailand are poised to enhance their bilateral and regional partnership as they prepare for successive ASEAN chairmanships, with Singapore taking the helm in 2027 and Thailand following in 2028. This commitment was solidified during the fifth Singapore-Thailand Leaders’ Retreat held in Bangkok on September 2, which marked the first such meeting in over a decade and the inaugural encounter between Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul. Both leaders emphasized the strength of their countries’ relations and pledged to establish a comprehensive agenda that would ensure a seamless transition between their respective ASEAN leadership roles.

The collaborative efforts between the two nations are set to expand across various sectors, including advancements in artificial intelligence, the digital and green economies, energy security, food safety, connectivity, and defense. Additionally, they underlined the importance of tackling transnational crime and reaffirmed their commitment to a rules-based international order and stronger ASEAN regional integration. A significant focus was placed on energy cooperation, particularly endorsing the ASEAN Power Grid and the Laos-Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore Power Integration Project. This project facilitates Singapore’s importation of renewable hydropower from Laos via Thailand and Malaysia, underscoring the strategic significance of regional energy collaboration.

Beyond energy, the leaders witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding aimed at bolstering social sector development. This agreement encompasses the sharing of knowledge and research in social welfare policies and promotes collaboration between relevant institutions. The memorandum signifies a mutual aspiration to enhance the social welfare landscape through increased cooperation and shared expertise.

Economic relations between Singapore and Thailand continue to be robust, with bilateral trade reaching approximately US$52.4 billion in 2025. Singapore has been Thailand’s largest source of foreign direct investment for three consecutive years, highlighting the deep economic interdependence between the two countries. This economic cooperation is expected to grow further as both nations continue to align their strategic objectives and leverage their leadership within ASEAN.
