The 2026 Lev N. Tolstoy International Peace Prize has been awarded to Tô Lâm, the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee and President. The decision to honor Tô Lâm was made unanimously by an international jury, highlighting his dedication to enhancing dialogue and cooperation among nations.
Valery Gergiev, jury chairman and a prominent figure in the arts as the General Director of the Bolshoi Theatre and Artistic Director of the Mariinsky Theatre, announced the award. He lauded Vietnam’s remarkable economic growth while maintaining its cultural heritage in a globally integrated world. Tô Lâm’s efforts in promoting Vietnam’s development and advocating for global justice were key factors in his selection, alongside his commitment to upholding international law and facilitating peaceful international dialogue.
The jury, which includes distinguished members such as Vladimir Tolstoy, a descendant of the Russian literary giant Leo Tolstoy and Director General of the State Museum of L.N. Tolstoy, French public figure Pierre de Gaulle, and South African parliamentarian Lindiwe Sisulu, underscored the enduring relevance of Tolstoy’s humanitarian values. They praised Vietnam’s evolution from a war-torn nation to a rapidly advancing economy in the Asia-Pacific region, viewing the country’s progress as a beacon of hope for those striving for peace and sustainable development.
Now in its third iteration, the Lev N. Tolstoy International Peace Prize honors individuals who have made noteworthy contributions to peace and the advancement of international understanding. The laureate is chosen by an esteemed international council that includes influential political, cultural, and public figures from countries such as Argentina, Belarus, China, France, India, Japan, Russia, and South Africa.
