The longstanding border tension between Cambodia and Thailand continues to simmer, with a recent ceasefire agreement unable to resolve underlying disputes over territorial boundaries. According to Cambodian officials, the truce, effective since December 27, does not establish a new international border or determine the legal ownership of contested areas.
Cambodian Information Minister Neth Pheaktra highlighted that both nations agreed to maintain their current military positions while ensuring the safe return of civilians displaced by earlier conflicts. Over 20,000 people were reportedly displaced due to the fighting. Pheaktra emphasized that the return of these civilians would serve as a barometer for the ceasefire’s effectiveness.
Despite the ceasefire, tensions remain due to actions taken by Thai forces, which Cambodia claims could alter the status quo. Pheaktra accused Thailand of reinforcing its presence in disputed territories by installing barbed wire, digging trenches, and building roads and military facilities. Cambodia argues that such actions could create new facts on the ground, potentially complicating future negotiations over the border.
In response, Thailand has taken international observers, including ASEAN delegates and journalists, to regions near the contested border. This includes visits to spots like the O’Smach casino area, where Thailand has raised concerns about the use of casino buildings and cross-border criminal activities. Cambodia, however, disputes Thailand’s claims of control and insists the territory belongs to Cambodia.
The complexity of the border issue underscores the challenges facing both countries in achieving a lasting resolution. As Cambodia and Thailand navigate this contentious situation, the international community watches closely, hoping for a peaceful and mutually agreeable outcome.
