As global challenges continue to mount, the call for international cooperation and respect for international law is growing louder on the world stage. At the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Vietnamese General Secretary and President To Lam emphasized the need for renewed trust among nations and stronger multilateral efforts to address pressing global issues.
To Lam outlined a comprehensive framework for managing global changes, focusing on four key areas: rebuilding trust based on the UN Charter and international law, fostering inclusive and sustainable development, responsibly governing emerging technologies, and reinforcing the United Nations’ central role. He stressed the importance of dialogue in managing differences, preventing conflicts, and respecting national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
In his address, To Lam underscored the potential of technological advancements like artificial intelligence and digital transformation to bridge development gaps. However, he warned against these advances creating further divisions and advocated for inclusive and transparent governance involving developing nations in the international rule-making process.
Addressing the structure and efficiency of the United Nations, To Lam expressed Vietnam’s support for reforming the organization, including changes to the General Assembly, Security Council, and Secretariat. These reforms, he noted, would enhance the UN’s effectiveness and better represent the interests of developing countries.
Touching on regional matters, To Lam reiterated Vietnam’s dedication to peaceful dispute resolution in line with international law. He affirmed the country’s commitment to multilateralism, ASEAN cooperation, and enhanced participation in UN peacekeeping missions. Through these efforts, Vietnam aims to contribute to global stability and security.
