During a recent meeting in Hanoi, Vietnamese Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng underscored the importance of strengthening Vietnam’s strategic partnership with Laos, focusing on enhancing economic collaboration and infrastructure development. This reaffirmation came as Hưng met with Vilay Lakhamfong, a high-ranking official from the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party, to discuss ways to translate high-level commitments into practical benefits for citizens of both nations.
Emphasizing Vietnam’s support for Laos’ national development, Hưng highlighted potential areas for expanded cooperation, including trade, investment, defence, security, education, and tourism. He advocated for accelerated progress on significant infrastructure projects such as the Hanoi–Vientiane expressway and the Vientiane–Vung Ang railway, alongside energy connectivity initiatives. Moreover, Hưng expressed a desire to see the proposed Laos–Vietnam Friendship University come to fruition.
The meeting also addressed regional and international collaboration, with both leaders agreeing on the necessity of coordinated efforts through organizations like the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the United Nations. A shared commitment was expressed towards the Vietnam–Laos Cooperation Strategy for 2021–2030 and the bilateral governmental cooperation agreement set for 2026–2030.
Looking ahead, preparations are underway for 2027, a year that will mark the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations and the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam–Laos Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation. Planned activities during the Vietnam–Laos Year of Friendship and Strategic Cohesion in 2027 aim to strengthen historical ties, particularly among younger generations.
Vilay Lakhamfong conveyed his gratitude for Vietnam’s continuous support in Laos’ development journey, reaffirming Laos’ dedication to preserving and enhancing the bilateral relationship. He also highlighted the importance of ongoing collaboration on regional security, stability, and economic growth.
The discussions concluded with both leaders expressing confidence that their countries’ closer cooperation would bolster political trust and contribute positively to regional peace and stability.
