Celebrating half a century of diplomatic relations, Thailand and Vietnam have elevated their partnership to the level of a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, marking a pivotal advancement in their political, economic, and technological ties. This development took place during an official visit by Vietnamese President and Communist Party General Secretary Tô Lâm to Thailand, where both nations signed four significant agreements. These agreements encompass areas such as economic cooperation, science and technology, education, and aviation development, setting the stage for future collaboration.
In an effort to expand their cooperation further, Thailand and Vietnam have formulated a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Action Plan for the years 2026 to 2031. This plan is designed to foster collaboration across a variety of sectors, enhancing both countries’ capabilities in addressing shared challenges. A key focus of their expanded cooperation includes strengthening security and defense measures, as well as tackling transnational crimes like online scams and illegal fishing. Economic coordination is also prioritized to mitigate global economic uncertainties and boost private-sector growth.
The bilateral trade between Thailand and Vietnam currently stands at approximately $22.1 billion, with both nations setting an ambitious target to increase this figure to $24 billion in the near future. Leaders from both countries have underscored the importance of closer economic ties to achieve this goal, emphasizing the need for enhanced collaboration in various economic domains.
Technology and innovation are positioned as central pillars of the partnership, with plans to intensify cooperation in areas such as satellite technology, semiconductors, and agricultural biotechnology. By focusing on these future industries, both nations aim to integrate their supply chains, enhance local economic connectivity, and support green energy initiatives. These efforts are intended to bolster regional competitiveness and ensure energy security.
President Tô Lâm reiterated Vietnam’s dedication to nurturing its relationship with Thailand, highlighting a shared commitment to promoting peace, stability, and sustainable development throughout Southeast Asia. As both countries look to the future, their strengthened ties are expected to play a crucial role in advancing regional prosperity and collaboration.
