In response to these escalating challenges, UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham has announced the establishment of a National Centre for Information Defence. This initiative, disclosed during his address at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, aims to strengthen the United Kingdom’s capabilities in combating hostile information campaigns.
The newly proposed centre will coordinate efforts across security agencies, law enforcement, and allied organizations to detect, attribute, and disrupt information attacks, particularly those orchestrated by foreign states. In his speech, Burnham highlighted the UK’s particular focus on countering disinformation campaigns attributed to Russia, which allegedly involve the use of bots, fake websites, and falsified content to manipulate public opinion. Burnham also referred to evidence of interference attempts in the UK’s 2019 general election.
