After choosing to bat first, Australia posted 294 for 8 in their allotted 50 overs. Renshaw’s impressive knock of 109 was pivotal, as he formed crucial partnerships with teammates Alex Carey and Ollie Peake, which helped stabilize the innings and set a challenging target for the hosts.
Despite a commendable bowling effort by Zimbabwe’s Newman Nyamhuri, who claimed 5 wickets for 62 runs, the home side struggled to contain Australia’s batsmen. Nyamhuri’s performance, however, was a highlight for Zimbabwe in a match where they were otherwise on the back foot.
In response, Zimbabwe’s innings concluded at 235 runs in 45.1 overs. The chase faced early setbacks with the loss of four quick wickets, but a partnership between Craig Ervine and Sikandar Raza brought some hope. The duo added 98 runs, with Ervine scoring 59 before being dismissed by Nathan Ellis, while Raza contributed 57 before falling to Spencer Johnson, signaling the end of Zimbabwe’s resurgence.
Nathan Ellis was the chief architect of Zimbabwe’s downfall, taking 5 wickets for 31 runs, effectively dismantling the lower order and sealing the win for Australia. The series will continue with the second ODI scheduled in Harare on Friday, followed by the final match on Sunday.
