Vietnam-Japan Strengthen Economic Ties Through Strategic Defense Sector Collaboration

In a recent meeting held in Hà Nội, Việt Nam and Japan have reaffirmed their commitment to bolstering defence cooperation in several key strategic domains. The discussions, led by Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence General Phan Văn Giang and General Uchikura Hiroaki, Chief of Staff of Japan’s Self-Defence Forces, focused on areas such as military training, cybersecurity, and the development of the defence industry. The talks also encompassed collaboration in United Nations peacekeeping operations and initiatives for post-war recovery.

General Giang highlighted Việt Nam’s dedication to enhancing mechanisms for consultation and dialogue, alongside expanding cooperation within various military branches. The General emphasized the importance of collaboration in defence technology, military medicine, and cybersecurity, noting that these defence relations are a cornerstone of the broader Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Việt Nam and Japan. He underscored Japan’s ongoing support in areas like personnel training, technology transfer, defence industry development, and post-war recovery efforts.

The meeting also saw a call from the Vietnamese side for more scholarship and training opportunities for its defence personnel, especially in the fields of science, engineering, and technology. General Uchikura echoed this sentiment, reaffirming Japan’s dedication to strengthening defence ties. He expressed a willingness to expand cooperation through high-level exchanges, military education, and healthcare services within the armed forces, as well as in the field of cybersecurity.

Japan’s role as one of Việt Nam’s principal economic and strategic allies was acknowledged, with a relationship that extends into trade, investment, development assistance, and labour exchanges. The two nations have seen significant growth in their defence cooperation, supported by regular policy dialogues and military consultations. These efforts have contributed to a stronger partnership and mutual understanding between the two countries.

Both sides concluded the meeting with a mutual agreement to maintain close coordination, aiming to enhance mutual trust and ensure regional stability. The discussions underscored the long-term strategic cooperation between Việt Nam and Japan, with both countries committed to fostering a robust and enduring partnership.
