In a significant diplomatic move, Anutin Charnvirakul and Emmanuel Macron have agreed to enhance the relationship between Thailand and France by establishing a strategic partnership. This decision was reached during official discussions held at the Élysée Palace in Paris, where the leaders focused on broadening cooperation across several vital sectors, including trade, investment, cybersecurity, defense, and advanced technology. The talks also covered regional developments in Southeast Asia, particularly concerning Cambodia and Myanmar.
The leaders expressed a mutual commitment to boost collaboration in innovative industries such as alternative energy, aerospace, aviation, smart power grids, and artificial intelligence infrastructure. France reiterated its support for the swift conclusion of the Thailand-European Union free trade agreement negotiations within the year. The trade discussions, initially launched in 2013, were put on hold in 2014 and resumed in 2023, with Thai officials noting the substantial economic opportunities the agreement could unlock for both parties.
Security and defense were also high on the agenda, with both countries agreeing to strengthen their efforts in cybersecurity. This includes tackling cybercrime, online scams, and transnational digital threats. On regional issues, Thailand reaffirmed its dedication to resolving border disputes with Cambodia through peaceful dialogue and adherence to international law.
In alignment with their strategic goals, the two nations announced plans to implement the Joint Action Plan to Strengthen the Thai-French Partnership for 2026-2028. This initiative is designed to lay the groundwork for a formal strategic partnership, enhancing cooperation across multiple sectors. Anutin’s visit also included meetings with executives from prominent French companies such as Airbus, Imerys, EssilorLuxottica, IN Groupe, and Thales Group. These discussions aimed at encouraging increased investment in Thailand’s burgeoning high-tech and future industries.
French companies expressed a positive outlook on the investment climate in Thailand. Notably, Airbus confirmed its intention to expand its aviation and engineering operations in the country, reflecting the growing confidence among French investors in Thailand’s economic prospects. This strategic partnership marks a new chapter in Thai-French relations, promising to foster deeper ties and mutual benefits for both nations.
