Thailand’s Visa Policy Shift Could Impact Indian Tourism and Business Relations

Thailand is set to alter its visa policies, ceasing the temporary 60-day visa-free entry scheme that had been advantageous to travelers from various nations, including India. This change signifies a shift back to more stringent entry requirements, potentially impacting how Indian tourists plan their visits to one of Asia’s most favored holiday spots. Under the newly approved regulations, Indian citizens must now secure a Visa on Arrival (VoA) upon arrival in Thailand or apply for an e-Visa prior to their trip.

The Visa on Arrival permits Indian tourists to stay in Thailand for up to 15 days per entry, a notable reduction from the previous 60-day period. For those wishing to avoid the hassle of airport queues, the option to apply online via Thailand’s official e-Visa system is available. Industry analysts suggest that these changes might discourage spontaneous travel and last-minute vacation bookings due to the added paperwork, application processes, and associated fees. Nevertheless, Thailand is likely to remain an appealing destination for Indian visitors due to its cost-effectiveness, convenient flight routes, varied tourism attractions, and renowned hospitality sector.

These updated visa rules are expected to particularly affect long-stay visitors, digital nomads, and tourists planning extended, multi-city trips. Travelers seeking more extended and flexible stays might look towards other Southeast Asian countries with more relaxed entry requirements. The new regulations are set to take effect 15 days after being published in the Royal Gazette. Until then, travelers entering Thailand will still be subject to the previous rules, allowing them to stay until their entry validity period expires.

Thailand’s initial expansion of visa-free access in 2024 was part of a strategy to boost tourism and stimulate economic growth post-pandemic. This policy successfully increased visitor numbers, reinforcing Thailand’s status as a preferred destination for leisure travel, family holidays, and special events. Officials have attributed the decision to tighten entry rules to concerns about visa overstays, unauthorized business activities, and the necessity for enhanced immigration control. The revised framework seeks to balance tourism expansion with effective border management and regulatory oversight.

Travelers planning trips to Thailand are advised to familiarize themselves with the updated visa requirements and entry guidelines before booking their flights and accommodations to ensure a seamless travel experience.
