Renowned director Mark Rydell, celebrated for his work on the Oscar-nominated film “On Golden Pond,” has passed away at the age of 97. He died of natural causes at a retirement community for entertainment professionals located in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles. Rydell’s distinguished career in the film industry was highlighted by his successful endeavors in both directing and acting.

In 1981, Rydell directed “On Golden Pond,” which brought together an iconic cast that included Henry Fonda, Katharine Hepburn, and Jane Fonda. The film was a critical and commercial triumph, earning 10 Oscar nominations. Both Henry Fonda and Hepburn received Oscars for their performances, while Rydell himself was nominated for Best Director, although he ultimately lost to Warren Beatty for “Reds.” The film achieved significant box-office success, grossing over $119 million worldwide. Notably, “On Golden Pond” marked Henry Fonda’s final film role and secured him his only Academy Award.

Throughout his directorial career, Rydell collaborated with some of Hollywood’s most illustrious stars. His impressive filmography includes working with talents such as Steve McQueen, John Wayne, Bette Midler, James Caan, Robert Redford, and Mel Gibson.
