As Vietnam and Norway approach the 55th anniversary of their diplomatic relations in 2026, both countries are taking significant steps to enhance their bilateral cooperation. On Friday, Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister Le Thi Thu Hang and Norwegian State Secretary Astrid Bergmål met in Hanoi to explore avenues for deepening economic and diplomatic ties, with a strong focus on trade, renewable energy, and maritime development.
A significant highlight of the meeting was the progress towards a Free Trade Agreement between Vietnam and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) member states. The conclusion of negotiations, which spanned 14 years, was welcomed by Hang, who urged all parties involved to expedite ratification procedures to pave the way for implementation. This agreement aims to improve market access, foster business partnerships, and provide greater certainty for investors.
The meeting also underscored the potential of the Green Strategic Partnership, signed in April, to support sustainable development and the transition to cleaner energy sources. Vietnam invited Norwegian businesses and financial institutions to increase investments in sectors such as renewable energy, maritime transport, shipbuilding, port infrastructure, logistics, and high-tech aquaculture.
Norway expressed interest in expanding cooperation in areas like marine management, sustainable aquaculture, green shipping, and the circular economy. Both countries emphasized the importance of sharing technology and expertise to advance carbon neutrality and enhance energy security.
Regional cooperation was another focal point of the discussions. Vietnam and Norway agreed to work more closely within the ASEAN-Norway partnership for 2026–2030, concentrating on the blue economy, energy transition, connectivity, innovation, and sustainable development. Additionally, they pledged to support each other in regional and international forums, including the United Nations, reinforcing the importance of free trade, international law, and the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
The meeting highlighted the shared commitment of both nations to expanding economic opportunities, strengthening diplomatic relations, and advancing sustainable development, setting a robust agenda for future cooperation.
