The VNREDSat-1 satellite program marks a significant milestone in deepening the collaboration between Vietnam and France in the realm of space technology. This collaboration is set to expand with a focus on next-generation satellites, technology transfer, training, and enhancing domestic capabilities. VNREDSat-1, Vietnam’s inaugural Earth observation satellite, was launched on May 7, 2013, and transferred to operational control in September of the same year. Originally designed for a five-year lifespan, the satellite continues to function into 2026, celebrating its 14th year of service.
Through this program, Vietnam has advanced its expertise beyond just satellite operations. Between 2011 and 2013, Vietnamese engineers underwent extensive training in France and Vietnam, acquiring skills in system design, satellite operations, and problem-solving. Over time, these engineers have evolved from following established procedures to independently resolving technical challenges, highlighting a shift towards self-sufficiency in space technology.
Vietnam has also implemented a comprehensive remote-sensing system that integrates imaging requests, satellite control, and data management processes. Since 2020, VNREDSat-1 has provided nearly 30,000 satellite images supporting environmental management, disaster monitoring, scientific research, socio-economic development, and defense and security activities. Trần Hồng Thái, President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, emphasized that while the program has laid a robust technical and human-resource foundation for future satellite initiatives, achieving greater technological independence will necessitate advancements in satellite design, payloads, electronics, and various other technical domains.
A new era of cooperation commenced during French President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to Vietnam in May 2025. During this visit, the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Airbus Defence and Space, and the French National Centre for Space Studies signed a declaration of intent to pursue long-term partnerships in space technology and Earth observation. This agreement aims to explore the development of a next-generation Earth observation system and the potential for a VNREDSat-2.
Future collaborations are expected to enhance Vietnamese involvement in mission planning, system design, and data applications. Opportunities for Vietnam to bolster domestic expertise include advancements in control software, remote-sensing image processing, artificial intelligence, ground systems, and selected sensors and payloads. The overarching goal is to transition from purchasing satellite systems to co-developing and mastering technology, enabling Vietnamese scientists and engineers to independently design, operate, and troubleshoot future satellite technologies.
