In a bid to bolster bilateral ties and enhance regional stability, Vietnam and Malaysia are advancing their defence cooperation. This initiative was underscored during discussions in Hanoi between Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister, General Phan Văn Giang, and Malaysia’s outgoing Ambassador, Dato’ Tan Yang Thai. The talks highlighted the ambassador’s contributions to strengthening the collaborative relationship between the two nations.
General Giang pointed out the significant strides made in defence relations, emphasizing the importance of ongoing military exchanges, policy dialogues, and joint training initiatives. These efforts have been further complemented by coordinated participation in international and multilateral forums, showcasing the growing partnership between Vietnam and Malaysia in the defence sector.
Looking ahead, Giang stressed the importance of continuing to implement existing agreements and deepening engagement through high-level meetings and established defence cooperation frameworks. This approach aims to sustain and expand the collaborative momentum that has been built over recent years.
In an effort to further cement ties, General Giang extended an invitation to Malaysia’s defence leaders and companies to attend the Vietnam International Defence Expo 2026, scheduled to take place in Hanoi. This event is envisioned as a platform to explore new opportunities for cooperation and showcase Vietnam’s defence capabilities.
Expressing gratitude for the support received from Vietnam’s defence ministry and military during his tenure, Ambassador Tan Yang Thai voiced his optimism about the future of defence relations between the two countries. He emphasized the shared goal of fostering peace and prosperity throughout the region, underscoring the importance of continued collaboration in achieving these objectives.
